Tuesday, September 14, 2004

With so much of her anxiety now lifted because of the friends she found in the beekeepers, Dana was free to continue her travels around Japan. Not only was she excited to see the sites, meet new people, and broaden her horizons, she also filled up on some excuisite food (for the most part). For now, the travelling was taking her mind off this dangerous, highly advanced AI from the future that was trying to track her down to kill her.

Sitting in her Tokyo hotel, she checked up on things back home. It was the day of the week where Melissa, the A.I. from the future, made a number of communications and updates to her website, and set up her communications rendezvous with the people she thought were her ship's crew. Dana couldn't help but chuckle at that every time she thought of it. Good thing Melissa wasn't able to see these people. She was one to talk though... if a captain could see her appearance now, she'd be thrown in the brig.

Dana checked her email at an internet terminal, and sifted through it all. In one, someone had sent another resource that it seemed a lot of people had begun to use. It was a simple script that accepted GPS coordinates and run through various mapping engines. Well that's nifty, she thought. It made a good companion to the catalogue of axons, and would at least help people find these new locations, and who were closest. So Dana updated her blog template with the website. It just made finding the phones so much easier, and the more help she could offer the beekeepers - old and new - the better. And there were new people joining the hive mind on a daily basis.

As Dana sat at the console, the beekeepers across North America, and some in the UK and Australia, and various other continents also, all sat in the same way - looking over emails, messages posts, websites... around the world, the scene was the same at every computer. It was like humanity was shown once again, that we're all fundamentally the same. In the hive mind, there were no borders, no races, no separations except the walls of the rooms they were in.

As curious eyes watched around the world for the day's updates from Melissa, she slowly grew stronger and stronger. Each refresh of a page of ilovebees.com was a network signal that extended her electronic reach and her enormous brain, node by node.

Fianlly, Melissa once again set up a page to broadcast a preview of the axon numbers and times and she would be connecting, so her crew (she thought) would be able to communicate with her and retrieve the audio records she was hearing like 'strange voices'. She modified the next page of the recipe list, comatas.html, to show the next axons. This time they were in oddly groups of 8 to 20 axons, with varying minimum successful connection limits, for a total of 29 memory block groups.

Not to be outdone, the Sleeping Princess had apparently hidden more strange text within the images on the website. The beekeepers were finding it hard to keep track of everything, so a few stepped up to create a catalogue of old and new images - the uncorrupted ones, and each version of the corrupted images. Even creating programs that would automatically download all the known corrupted images, test the contents, and report any new changes, extracing and documenting the inserted data. There were definitely many intelligent beekeepers at work.

One of the new extractions caught their collective eye.

The queen was worried about one of her messages not getting through. She is Suspicious of You. She went along one of the secret roads to see what was wrong. As soon as I saw her go, I ran up to the tower, where I found some new stuff that she was holding back in case her security was compromised. I've left you clues about where to find it, if you're clever...

That seemed to explain all the strange text they found in the new corruptions - even a couple of extractions that weren't text at all, but seemingly gibberish. It was quickly discovered that the gibberish was actually binary data, and a recognizable code showed it was image data. The princess had embedded images within the images! Sure enough, the beekeepers soon had all the new corruptions catalogued, but couldn't yet make sense of them.
These are the snippets they found...

Dextera struck first, launching an attack with his Medius unit. Hoping to encircle his enemy with a pincer movement, he sent his Primo unit to attack from the southwest, while the crack troops of his Orbis division attacked North. Caught off guard, it was all Laevus could do to send his Medians to harry his enemy to the southeast. Dextera's surprise attack was paying off. His Median legions continued to repeat their assault, and his Orbis continued their attack to the north, but he withdrew his Primo from the chance of encountering hard battle, and sent them North as well to concentrate his forces.
The troops of Laevus were heartened by this apparent retreat. His Primo unit attacked to the north east, routed its foes, and then pushed east. His Brevis legions joined the fray, attacking valiantly, and finally an attack by the myrmidons of his Orbis units drove back all resistance.

Another silent, elusive update was almost missed on the front page. The Princess had neatly changed the colour of certain letters of Melissa's Transmission summary to green. Listing these letters in order, the beekeepers found it read:

i fo un d so me t h i n g for you

On top of that, the last word 'you' was itself a link to a new page, named from another faery tale - humptydumpty.html. On this page, the Princess left a message and a nice gift.

While the Queen was distracted, I snuck into her workshop and found these and commandeered them. Commandeered is what I say when I steal something but it's okay. ;-)

The Queen's version was all just week+subject stuff, but I gave them chapters and titles like a proper story.

Chapter One

Kamal: "The Arrangement"
Jersey: "Boy Meets Girl"

Chapter Two

Kamal: "The Red Button"
Jersey: "If Someone Was Listening"

They wondered why Herzog's subject was left out, then remembered that Melissa didn't know about those recordings, so the Princess hadn't included them in her compilations of what she comandeered from Melissa.

So the people gathered once again in the message boards and in chat rooms to try to figure out what these 'clues' meant.

As Dana returned the next day to the same internet terminal, she re-checked on the status of things. Her jaw dropped as she couldn't find a single unsolved puzzle. The beekeepers had solved all the puzzles in less than a day. Other patrons of the cafe looked at her curiously as she sat open mouthed for a good half minute. Dana had the list of puzzles in front of her, and couldn't for the life of her figure out how any were solved. Then she realized she was being watched. She closed her mouth, smiled innocently, bent down to her coffee for sip and tried to hide from the stares until they stopped.

Dana read through what had happened so far, and without wanting to cause a stir by listening to the audio recordings that were found, she read the transcriptions that were already publicly accessible. It was exciting to know that the Princess was giving everyone access to secret transmissions Melissa was hiding. But it opened up new doors for big danger if it was discovered.

She cleaned up her recent blogs, removing the frequent useless or offensive comments some people had posted, then began deciding what to write in a new entry. She had a lot to share.

found and lost [Wednesday, September 15, 2004]

All the King's horses and all the King's men... well, you know. Hopeless. The Queen, on the other hand, just put her scrambled transmissions together again.

Now we can listen to the Operator's broken-up audio files in their original order — compliments of the Sleeping Princess, who found 'em for us while the Queen was fussing over her axons.

And that's not all the Sleeping Princess found. Apparently, the Operator has been holding out on us... keeping a secret stash of transmissions. Intercepted communications she doesn't trust us to hear yet. But for some reason, the Sleeping Princess wants us to have them now. A dozen puzzles later, we've got 'em — and for now, we know more than the Operator thinks we do.

*

In other news: Ming tian jian, China!

After 3 weeks, Shanghai felt... familiar. Time to be lost again.

Where to? A friend of mine once said that Shibuya Crossing was the only place on earth his invisible superpowers worked. I always remembered that. So, off I went to become an anonymous speck in Tokyo. I landed at Narita Airport on Sunday.

Something kind of funny happened during the flight. The guy sitting next to me on the plane had a sketchbook and some colored pencils with him — I noticed this when I nosily started watching over his shoulder. (Yeah, I know, bad habit.) Then I completely freaked him out by yelping not very quietly and clutching his arm—yes, his arm!—when I realized what he was drawing. It was a picture of girl holding a bunch of balloons. When he pulled out the red pencil to start coloring them in, I almost lost it. (Ridiculous, I know.) Then I had to try to explain to him why red balloons made me so jumpy. I don't think he quite got it. But I had to tell you guys the story — because I knew you'd understand perfectly.

It's awfully nice to have so many allies out there who understand perfectly.

Friday, September 17, 2004

Friday rolled around, and after having enhottenated as many axons as possible, retrieving most of the audio recordings, the Princess once again updated the 404 Error page on the website. The beekeepers had solved the puzzles faster than she expected, so she made sure that the new secret axons were also added to the recipe3.html page, hidden from Melissa. The Princess was excited about what Melissa unknowingly overheard from Herzog this week. It had meat.

Her 404 message to the beekeepers this week brought with it a looming cloud of sadness as she came to the end - she was able to write another 2 chapters to her own Perdita's Story. But she was most excited that so many beekeepers actually made such a successful effort to keep Melissa busy during the week, and letting her know when Melissa would be busy so she could go snooping around the Castle. Risky though it was, the Princess was more than successful, and shared her excitement with everyone in her message.

Whew! THAT was exciting.

Thanks to everyone who kept the Queen distracted! There are too many to name all of you, 'cept I have to say especially thanks to HitsHerMark because I like that name, and Mr Beefy because his name is funny, and Ceantari because if she has the hindquarters of a horse people probably tease her, and Rowan because she has been my friend from the veriest beginning.

Because of you all, I found where the Queen had hidden those other stories. I hope you don't mind that I played a few games with you about finding them. I love to play games, but I haven't had very many people to play with. I've thought of trying to teach the Pious Flea to play checkers, but he is a Bug of Very Little Brain, and I am not hopeful.

I also found the Queen's secret roads for this time, and if you like knowing what is in them, you should thank Sara, who sent me a very funny story, 'cuz she made a game out of my game. AND she taught me that this is what I do when I laugh out loud, :D

Here is her story:

When I put on my formal_wear, complete with commissary_shoes, my_landlady thought I was bound for domestic_bliss. But she didn't know that I was really so_mean. I had a_secret_life, with a really old desktop_model that worked better as a doorstopper. One day she found out and told me I had better relocate before she got out her knockout_gas. I hoped a flower_delivery would make her change her mind, but guess_not. So I went down the street, where a cow_even would hate.

I don't quite know what the end means. I guess it's Modern Art. ;-)

I have to tell you, talking to you means so much to me. It's nice to think there is a world beside this one where I am all alone in buzzing, flickering darkness. I like to imagine I had that kind of life, once upon a time.

Well.

No point moping here feeling sad and lonely. That's not me. I'm a survivor. Since Sara was nice enough to write me a story, I will work extra hard to finish my story for you.

Perdita's Story

Chapter 3: Scraps
Together Perdita and the Clockwork Rat set out to travel the city together. The Rat promised he would show Perdita the way home, and at first the little girl's heart jumped for joy.

But although the Rat was true to its word about finding safe dark holes to hide in, and scraps to eat of things almost like food, somehow they never seemed to find the humble tin-cutter's cottage.

And the night never ended.

And the day never broke.

And the line of red balloons behind Perdita grew long and long.

At last Perdita had to stop and sleep again, so the Clockwork Rat showed her a special hidden spot behind in a ball-bearing factory that looked strangely like the one her mother worked in, only this one had been abandoned for years and years. He covered her up in sawdust and bits of old packing tape, and Perdita fell asleep to the sound of her new friend clicking and clattering through the gloom with a sound like faraway pennies sliding across a concrete floor.

It was still dark when she woke up, and she felt a throbbing pain in her hand. When she looked down, she found one of her thumbs was missing. In its place was the head of a pair of needle-nose pliers. She looked around for the Clockwork Rat. He was perched on the edge of a rusting barrel full of rain water, furiously washing something off his little scissor claws.

"Hey!" Perdita shouted, so loudly that the Clockwork Rat squeaked with alarm and tumbled into the water. Perdita ran over and stuck her hand into the barrel and fished around until she clamped the Rat's rubber tail in the grips of her new metal thumb and pulled him out.

"My thumb is gone!" Perdita said. "And something feels funny about my right eye, too!"

The Clockwork Rat spluttered and shook itself with a sound like marbles dropping into an empty can. "Are you worried that you aren't pretty any more, and your family won't want you if they find you?"

"No!" Perdita cried. But she bit her lip, in the exquisitely fetching manner she did when perplexed., and was careful not to look at her reflection in the barrel of rain water. And as they walked through the city that day (or rather, night, for still the dawn would not come) she looked away from all the windows.

The night stretched on much as the last one hand. They had now walked so far that if it hadn't been for the trail of balloons, Perdita would have given up all hope of ever being found. When finally she fell asleep again, the sound of tin-snips followed her into her dreams.

When she woke up, there was a small electric iron at the bottom of her right leg instead of a foot, and something felt strange about her hair.

"Rat! Rat!" she cried. "What is happening to me?"

"What happens to all lost children," said the Clockwork Rat. He gave a little shrug that sounded like the squeak of a rusting tricycle wheel. "But as long as you can keep from seeing your own reflection, there is still a chance your family might rescue you before it is too late."

Perdita forced herself not to cry, because she was a brave girl, and full of pluck. "Today we will find my home," she said.

But they didn't.

Chapter 4: The Looking-Glass
The next time Perdita woke up, she found an egg-beater where her left hand used to be, and when she bit her lip she found her teeth had gone all thin and flat and sharp as tin.

"Clockwork Rat! Clockwork Rat!" Perdita said, as tears of bright oil began to leak from her eyes. "What if I'm not beautiful any more? Why hasn't my family come to look for me? Am I so hideous they wouldn't take me back?"

But the Clockwork Rat said, "I do not know."

With a cry, Perdita turned and ran for the nearest shop window. "Don't!" the Rat cried, but it was too late. Standing in the wicked yellow light of the streetlamp, Perdita stared full at her own reflection, and wept at what she saw.

There was a scrabble of claws behind her. "I told you not to do that," the Clockwork Rat said, with a voice like shell casings rattling on a steel floor. Whirling around in dismay, Perdita saw that the Rat had climbed to the top of the phone boot where Perdita had tied her last red balloon. As the little girl watched, the Rat flexed its paws and put its little hooked scissor claws around the string.

"No!" Perdita cried.

But the Rat laughed with a sound like scalpels bouncing on a metal tray, and cut the string, and the red balloon went drifting up, up, up into the night sky.

And that's the end.

The end.

The end.

I'm sorry.

I wanted to make the story come out happy, but it didn't.

They don't sometimes.

I think I need to go now.

love,

Many beekeeprs had to dry their eyes after that chapter. It was like the Rat just cut away Perdita's last hope at being found. The only colour left in the dreary, grey world she felt abandoned in. The image of the little girl all alone there conjured up feelings of pain and sympathy. The Princess was writing this?

Taking a collective deep breath, the beekeepers continued their work. All the people who's names were mentioned in the Princess' message were really encouraged to hear they made a difference. Sarah, the girl who wrote a short story using the answers to the puzzles the Princess gave, inspired others to try the same, and it was a fun way for them to pass time.

But attentions were quickly snapped back into place when they noticed the new axons on recipe3.html. Immediately axon hunters nearest by went on their trek.

Those beekeepers remaining at home on their computers were able to pull the new advanced screening of Melissa's axons for the following week, updated by the Princess like last week within the corrupted killer.jpg images. They catalogued them, and listed them for easy access and route planning for everyone who was able to go on the hunt come Tuesday.

Over the weekend, the hunters closest to the three new secret axons tried desperately to find their locations. They managed to retrieve only 2 of the 3. They overheard the last half of a conversation between Herzog and the Lieutenant, but simply could not get a hold of that first axon named the_labyrinth. It was in a very busy part of London, and they just couldn't seem to find the right payphone, and with only one chance a day - even that was iffy because of time zones and seasonal time shifts, it was proving to be very difficult.

But, nothing could quell the excitement brewing within the hive mind. The beekeepers were very proud of their abilities and skills when it came to problem solving. And they had solved the riddles the Princess had given them with relative ease. Knowing how fond of puzzles the Princess was, they knew the puzzles would be harder next time, if there was a next time. But with the future of many lives possibly in their hands, they hoped the Princess wouldn't outsmart them. They were already starting to show signs of failure with one single axon that couldn't be found. What if that audio portion had critical information that could save lives?

Even so, this is how they connected and solved the Princess' embedded puzzles... First, grouping similar exerpts together, they were able to then connect the leftovers with puzzles in ways that made sense. These leftovers were usually instructions on how to deal with the clues. The solved phrases were the filenames for the audio clips, and when used in correct urls, would be downloadable, just like the axon clips.

Here are their first week's solves...

1,1 sounds like mom
1,3 sounds like fairy
1,2 sounds like kiss
2 <points at feet>
The numbers were guessed to refer to words and symbols. So the first word apparently rhymed with mom-kiss-fairy, and the 2nd word was a word for feet.
Graldur managed to figure out the first word, and with Extrasonic's help on the 2nd word, the answer was found to be "commissary shoes"

Solved in a live chat amongst a few beekeepers, it was found if you used the Courier font, looping the following letters at 10 to a line, you'd have the last two letters left over - di. Diagonal? In that 10x10 letter square, reading the letters corner to corner, the phrase "formal wear" was found.

Solved again in a live chat, someone noticed that if you map out the positions, they make a 2x3 grid. Someone then took a stab and tried putting the grid on a phone button grid, seeing that it fit. Running with that, knowing the Queen, Melissa, was also known as the Operator, they tried starting at the 0 button. Suddenly it was clear - the P numbers meant which letter on the button to press. In the end, the phrase "my landlady" was found.

On a roll, the chatting group continued their rampage, solving this puzzle too. Knowing how the Princess likes stories where the girl is the hero, they listed all the female protagonists in the stories shown in the image. Taking the first letter of each of them, they found it spelled out "domestic bliss"

A plain riddle this one turned out to be. At first it confused the beekeepers. Coffeejedi made the first guess "secret life", but that turned up empty. That was the best guess they had. Until Vidstudent came along and noticed the mixup - he fixed the grammar parallel and added "a", to find "a secret life"

A bee and a belle both enjoy this
A mailman and a midwife both worry about that

Another simple riddle. They hoped. A bee and a belle... a belle is another word for a young girl. What's the commonality? Maybe a flower, which was suggested CoffeeJedi. What about the mailman and midwife? Mykie took the guess and said 'delivery', and the next phrase was discovered - "flower delivery"

With a group like the hive mind filled with techies, one of the first things people always seem to try on gibberish is the ROT cypher - simply shifting the letters of the alphabet a certain number of positions (eg, ROT-3 makes A become D, etc). In this case, Shadow got the first correct guess by shifting letters once to the left (eg E becomes D), and arrived at "desktop model"

fa la
median mode
Atrophied was the first to see that the missing words in these two sets were fa 'so' la, and median 'mean' mode. Together, they made "so mean"

Teamwork is always a good thing. This puzzle proved to be a little more complex. The image of playing cards was definitely showing a number of games of blackjack. The clue seemed to hint to discard the bust hands. That left pairs of cards totalling values under 22. Clamatius and Johnny_Nitro, working together, realized the numbers were letters of the alphabet, which came out to "guess not"

Looking like a matchstick puzzle, this one had an image of red and black lines looking like they were numbered. Worker found that the red lines would move. Seeing that the numbers in the clue were all 8 and under, and elephant had 8 letters, he thought perhaps the numbered steps were saying to move that line to the letter number beside it. So eg, 1) 5 would mean move line #1 to the 5th letter. With that guide, the folks in the chat room managed to make the adjustments and form what looked like the word "relocate". How ironic.

holstein_odd
ayrshire_odd
This one took a lot of deliberation. What the heck were holstein and ayrshire? Holstein was another word for a cow, but only after a little research was Ayrshire also found to be a cow. So what's an odd cow? Mr.Beeft took a stab and guessed that the parallel should be "cow even". He was right.

Dextera struck first, launching an attack with his Medius unit. One of the last and most intuitive of the puzzles to be solved, Johnny_Nitro and Karmic managed to figure it out. It was a story alright, but what did it mean? The names were all latin. Laevus and Dextera meant left and right. Primo, Medius, Orbis, and Brevis were actually the four fingers. With some trial and error, they attempted to map out the attack and movement routes described in the story for each of the fingers. Amazingly, each motion added another letter to make the phrase "knockout gas"

After that crazy day of record breaking puzzle solving, the beekeepers were exhausted. But the work was not yet complete... The elusive 'the labyrinth' axon still remained unattainable.
